For a lithium thermal battery, the discharge characteristics and the products of CrCl3 reduction reaction occurring in the cathode are studied. The maximum discharge capacity of the cathode material is found to be 0.45 A h g–1 (550°С). Discharge of CrCl3 cathode to the metallic chromium proceeds via an intermediate stage forming a molten mixture of Li3CrCl6x(Br6(1 –x)) complex compounds and lithium halogenides.
